India is set to get back its access to the EU market for aquaculture products that were excluded last year because of the use of antimicrobial substances. According to the EU policy, the use of antimicrobials in aquaculture products to increase their yield is not allowed, but India had done it before, and so was omitted from the list in 2024.
Now, India follows a series of compliance measures to meet the EU guidelines on the use of antimicrobial medicines in food-producing animals. Exporting countries have to follow a protocol to limit the use of antimicrobial substances for growth. This has shown confidence in India's food safety norms and regulatory framework, according to the EU, the Commerce Ministry says. Once formally adopted, the revised regulation would ensure uninterrupted Indian aquaculture products export to the EU market, according to the ministry.
